My newest book has arrived!

The Speedlight Studio by Michael Mowbray

“The Speedlight Studio” will ship from Amazon on January 13, 2015

Book #2 has arrived!  Well, at least I received my advance copies of The Speedlight Studio  in the mail this week. 🙂

The Speedlight Studio is a comprehensive guide to creating your own speedlight-based portrait photography studio.  In this book, I take you through all of the steps you need to consider when putting together your lighting kit, including a thorough explanation of portrait lighting, and a complete comparison of the most common lighting modifiers for portraiture. In fact, you could take the word “speedlight” out of the title and this new book would work very well as an excellent guide for lighting portraiture in general.

In the coming weeks I will feature snippets from the book so that you can see what it is all about.

The Speedlight Studio is available for pre-order on Amazon now and will be shipping January 13, 2015.  Order your copy today so you can be one of the first to wield its speedlighty power!

Shooting and Thrilling at PhotoU in Ohio

Model – Baylie Street. Photographed in the hotel lobby with two bare-headed speedlights. Processed in Lightroom using Preset-o-Rama “Antoinette”

I had the good fortune of being asked to teach a “Shoot to Thrill” speedlight workshop at PhotoU last week in Columbus, Ohio. In our full-day workshop I focused on how to master using speedlights for virtually any type of lighting. I mixed  studio-style manual speedlighting using Godox/Neewer 850 flashes with how to battle the sun with TTL (using Canon 600EX-RT flashes) and manual (Godox AD360 super flash).

Here are a handful of my favorites that I created while I was teaching.  None of the images have been edited or retouched in Photoshop.  Just a few treatments using my Preset-o-Rama Lightroom presets and some cropping — that’s it.

Demonstrating how to get a spiky sun effect. Captured in the middle of the afternoon in a vacant lot across the street from the conference hotel. Settings were 1/200 @ f22, ISO 100 using a Sigma 20mm lens. Lighting was from two Canon 600EX-RT flashes off camera.

Some of my workshoppers at work. This is the setting and the light conditions we were working with. Less than ideal, no?

Special thanks to my students who helped hold my lights, to Professional Photographers of Ohio, toAmerican Color Imaging and Graphic Authority for sponsoring me, and to my awesome model, Baylie Street. ‪#‎pporocks‬ ‪#‎ACI‬ ‪#‎speedlights‬

So we took those conditions and made this…

Personally, I like this version using my Preset-o-Rama “Gold Rush” preset

Here’s one using the Godox AD360 super flash shot in manual and high speed sync using a Westcott 26″ RapidBox as a modifier. Pretty! (And pretty windy outside, too!)
